How I Built 3 Passive Income Streams Working 2 Hours a Day

I didn't set out to build passive income. I set out to run a few experiments and see what stuck. Twelve months later, three of them are still paying me — and I'm still only working about two hours a day on all of it combined.

I didn't set out to build passive income. I set out to run a few experiments and see what stuck. Twelve months later, three of them are still paying me — and I'm still only working about two hours a day on all of it combined.

Here's exactly what I did, what failed, and what the numbers actually looked like.

The Setup

I had a full-time job, maybe two hours of genuine free time on weekdays, and a deep skepticism of anything that sounded too good. That skepticism turned out to be useful — it kept me from chasing shiny objects and forced me to treat each experiment like a real test with a hypothesis, not a get-rich-quick fantasy.

My rule: one new stream per quarter. Test it seriously for 90 days. Keep it if it earns anything meaningful. Drop it if it doesn't.

I tested six things over the course of a year. Three survived.

Stream 1: Crypto Exchange Affiliate Program

Month started: January Time investment: ~45 min/day Month 3 earnings: $180 Month 6 earnings: $340 Now: Runs at about 20 min/day of content work

This was my first experiment and honestly the one I expected least from.

I signed up for an affiliate program on a crypto exchange I was already using. Wrote three articles explaining basic concepts — how to read a trading chart, what spot trading actually means, how fees work across different platforms. Added my referral link naturally at the end of each one.

The first month: two signups, both friends. Combined earnings: $11.

I almost dropped it. Instead I kept writing. By month three the articles started getting organic traffic and the referrals came from strangers. That felt different. That felt like a system.

What surprised me most: recurring commission. Every time a referred user trades, I earn a percentage. I don't have to do anything. The exchange does the work. I just keep adding content to keep the traffic coming in.

Stream 2: Learn-to-Earn + Airdrop Farming

Month started: April Time investment: ~30 min/day (some weeks zero) Total earned to date: ~$600 in tokens (value fluctuates) Now: Passive — I check in once a week

This one is the most unpredictable of the three — which is exactly why I find it interesting.

I started participating in testnets and learn-to-earn campaigns systematically. Kept a simple spreadsheet: project name, tasks completed, expected reward, status. Treated it like a part-time job for about 60 days.

Some projects paid out nothing. Two paid out tokens that went nowhere. One paid out tokens that 4x'd within six months of the mainnet launch.

I didn't know which one would pop. That's the point — you don't need to predict. You need to participate broadly enough that when one works, it covers the ones that didn't.

Time investment now: nearly zero. I check my spreadsheet weekly, add new promising projects occasionally, and let the rest sit.

Stream 3: Crypto-Focused Newsletter

Month started: July Time investment: ~45 min/day Month 3 subscribers: 280 Month 6 subscribers: 810 Now: Monetized via affiliate links and one sponsor

This one took longest to feel real — but it's become the most stable of the three.

I started a weekly newsletter covering one crypto concept per issue, written for people who are curious but not technical. No price predictions. No hype. Just clear explanations of how things work and why it matters.

Growth was slow at first. Then I started sharing issues in relevant communities — not spamming, genuinely contributing and mentioning the newsletter when relevant. Subscribers started coming in steadily.

By month six I had enough of an audience to attract a small sponsor. Combined with affiliate links inside each issue, it now generates consistent monthly income that I can actually predict.

What Failed

Three experiments didn't survive the 90-day test.

NFT flipping — too much time, too unpredictable, felt more like gambling than a system.

Yield farming on a small DeFi protocol — smart contract risk made me uncomfortable, and the returns didn't justify it.

A YouTube channel — I underestimated how long it takes to build an audience through video. Might revisit this later with more time.

No shame in any of it. Failed experiments give you data. Data tells you where to focus.

The Honest Numbers

Combined, my three streams now generate between $800–$1,200 per month depending on crypto market conditions. Not life-changing. Not nothing.

More importantly: the time I put in during month one still pays me in month twelve. That's the actual definition of passive income — not zero effort, but effort that compounds beyond the hours you put in.

Two hours a day. Ninety days per experiment. Three things that worked.

That's the whole system.

What I'd do differently: Start the newsletter first. Email is the most durable asset I've built — more stable than traffic, more personal than social media, fully owned by me.
