The Best Places to Live If You're Done Paying Too Much Tax

I used to pay 32% income tax. Then I moved. Not to a beach — well, eventually to a beach — but first to a spreadsheet that changed how I thought about where I live and why.

Four years on the road, income in her laptop. Writes about freedom as a lifestyle, not just a goal.

The Best Places to Live If You're Done Paying Too Much Tax

I used to pay 32% income tax. Then I moved. Not to a beach — well, eventually to a beach — but first to a spreadsheet that changed how I thought about where I live and why.

Nobody tells you, when you're starting out, that where you live is one of the biggest financial decisions you'll ever make. Not what you invest in. Not how hard you hustle. Where you physically are when you earn your money.

Here are three places I'd genuinely consider — and what living there actually means beyond the tax rate.

1. Georgia (the country, not the state)

I landed in Tbilisi for the first time expecting a stopover. I stayed for four months.

Georgia runs a territorial tax system — meaning foreign-sourced income is simply not taxed locally. If your clients are outside Georgia and you're a small business earning under around $165,000 annually, you're looking at a 1% tax rate. Not a typo.

The cost of living is remarkably low. A comfortable apartment in the center of Tbilisi runs $400–600/month. Good coffee costs less than a dollar. The food is extraordinary.

What surprised me most wasn't the tax situation — it was how liveable it is. Fast internet, a growing nomad community, stunning mountain landscapes a two-hour drive away. Many nationalities can stay visa-free for up to a year, no application required.

It's not for everyone. The infrastructure is still developing, the language barrier is real outside of major cities, and banking as a non-resident takes some patience. But for a first step toward tax optimization with a genuinely low cost of living, Georgia is hard to beat.

The tax reality: 0% on foreign income. 1% for small business owners. No minimum stay requirement to maintain this benefit.

2. UAE — Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Dubai is the obvious choice, and obvious choices are sometimes obvious for good reason.

Zero personal income tax. Full stop. You keep everything you earn. The remote work visa is straightforward to obtain, requires proof of employment or freelance income, and processes quickly. After 183 days you can qualify for official tax residency — which matters if you're trying to formally exit your home country's tax system.

The infrastructure is world-class. Internet is fast and reliable. English is widely spoken. The safety record is exceptional.

The honest trade-off: it's expensive. A decent apartment in Dubai costs significantly more than Tbilisi or Lisbon. The culture is conservative compared to European nomad hubs. And the climate — six months of genuinely brutal heat — is not for everyone.

But if you're earning well and want a clean, legally robust tax residency with zero income tax and a city that actually functions, Dubai delivers exactly what it promises.

The tax reality: 0% income tax, with tax residency achievable after 90–120 days of stay. Corporate tax up to 9% applies to businesses — personal income from remote work remains untaxed.

3. Costa Rica

This one holds a special place for me — it was the first place that made the nomad lifestyle feel like a real, sustainable life rather than an extended holiday.

Costa Rica operates a territorial tax system. Foreign-sourced income — the kind most digital nomads and remote workers earn — is exempt from local income tax. The digital nomad visa requires proof of at least $3,000/month income and costs around $100 to apply. It's valid for a year and renewable, and comes with the ability to open a local bank account and import work equipment tax-free.

The country is genuinely beautiful — rainforest, coastline, wildlife, and a stable democracy with decent healthcare. The expat infrastructure is mature, particularly around areas like Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, and parts of San José.

It's not the cheapest option on this list. And the "pura vida" pace of life, while charming, can clash with productivity if you're not disciplined about your work environment. But for a comfortable, safe, tax-friendly base in the Americas — especially for those working with North American clients in compatible time zones — it's one of the most balanced options available.

The tax reality: 0% on foreign-sourced income. Digital nomad visa renewable after one year.

The Part That Matters Most

Tax is only one part of the equation.

The best place to live is the one where you can actually work well, stay healthy, and feel like yourself. I've met nomads who chose Dubai purely for tax reasons and were miserable within six months. I've met others who stumbled into Tbilisi and never left.

Do the tax math. Then spend two weeks in the country before you commit to anything.

The spreadsheet tells you what's possible. Living there tells you what's right.

FAQ: Best Tax-Friendly Countries for Digital Nomads

Why is Georgia (the country) considered a top choice for small business owners?

Georgia offers a highly attractive 1% tax rate for small businesses earning under approximately $165,000 annually. Additionally, it follows a territorial tax system, meaning foreign-sourced income is not taxed locally. For many nationalities, it is possible to stay visa-free for up to a year, making it an accessible first step for tax optimization with a very low cost of living.

What are the main benefits and trade-offs of moving to the UAE (Dubai or Abu Dhabi)?

The UAE provides a 0% personal income tax environment where you keep everything you earn. It features world-class infrastructure, fast internet, and high safety; however, the trade-offs include a higher cost of living compared to other nomad hubs and a climate with several months of intense heat. Tax residency can be achieved after staying for 90–120 days, which is beneficial for those looking to formally exit their home country's tax system.

How does the tax system work for remote workers in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica operates a territorial tax system, which means income earned from clients outside the country is exempt from local income tax. To qualify for the digital nomad visa, you must prove a monthly income of at least $3,000. The visa is valid for one year, is renewable, and allows you to open local bank accounts and import work equipment tax-free.

Everyone asks me what the first step is. I used to say "book the flight." Now I say something different — because I've watched too many people book the flight before they were ready, and come home six weeks later more lost than when they left.
